What are the pros and cons of natural-looking dental crowns?
Dental crowns are a common restoration used by the dentists of Dentistry at LaSalle in Burlington (Aldershot), Ontario. In fact, it has always been a reliable solution for patients who need the strength and protection of a natural tooth. Dental crowns, or “caps,” provide a natural-looking solution for patients to protect the remaining tooth structure from damage that may otherwise require permanent extraction.
What is a dental crown?
Dental crowns are restorative dental treatments that cover the visible part of the tooth. This is mainly for teeth that have had procedures performed, such as large fillings or root canal therapy. These teeth might be weak and more susceptible to damage, requiring an extra layer of protection to ensure their longevity. Our dental crowns are made of porcelain, a strong, durable material that looks just like natural tooth enamel, for a reliable and natural-looking repair.
What are the pros of dental crowns?
Quality dental crowns have several benefits, making them an excellent option for many of our patients upon placement. Dental crowns:
- Can protect the teeth when large fillings compromise the natural tooth structure
- Reshape the teeth and address misalignment, discoloration, and breakage
- Allow patients to maintain natural teeth that have experienced cracks or chips
- Are durable, often lasting many years with proper care and attention
- Protect natural tooth structure after invasive procedures such as root canal therapy
- Look completely natural when fabricated from quality porcelain material
- Are used over dental implants to replace missing teeth

What are the cons of dental crowns?
Dental crowns do have some disadvantages that patients will need to consider. Crowns may need to be replaced if broken or worn down. They can come loose if the dental bonding is affected, which is why we encourage patients to visit the office regularly to check for changes in the fit and function of their crowns and other restorations. Patients will want to be mindful of brushing and flossing carefully around the dental crown, as infection and decay can occur to the natural structure underneath the restoration.
