Frequently asked questions about composite dental fillings
Filling an area of tooth decay is often the best way to address the cavity and keep it from becoming larger and deeper. However, there has been debate regarding the best material used to do this. Over the years, many dentists in the Aldershot, Ontario, area focused on using a material known as silver amalgam. While some dentists still utilize this material for fillings, it is not the best material due to the increased risk of mercury toxicity. Instead, our team at Dentistry at LaSalle focuses on the smile’s health and may recommend an alternative material known as composite resin. Continue reading to find out if composite resin fillings are right for you!
What is composite resin?
With composite resin fillings, patients are obtaining a material that is made of a combination of plastic and glass. This material is used to fill areas of tooth decay just like silver amalgam, but it does not come with the same concerns regarding mercury levels.
What are the advantages of composite resin?
There are several benefits for our patients who are interested in using composite resin for tooth fillings. They include the following:
- Appearance. One of the main benefits is its natural appearance. Unlike silver amalgam, composite resin can be matched to the specific colour of your natural teeth, making it virtually invisible.
- Durability. Composite resin tooth decay fillings are strong and can withstand everyday natural wear and tear, just like silver amalgam. They can also last for many years with proper care.
- Bonding capabilities. Composite resin bonds directly to the tooth structure, creating a stronger seal and preventing further damage or decay.
- Conservative. Dental fillings with composite resin require less removal of the natural tooth structure and are a more conservative alternative to other materials used in dentistry.
- Safety. Silver amalgam fillings contain an extensive amount of mercury, which can be harmful to patients. Composite resin fillings do not pose this risk and are healthier to put in place. They do not expand and contract with changes in the temperature, which can break the seal of the tooth and cause bacteria to enter into the inner portion of the tooth. This is common with silver amalgam fillings.
- Versatility. Composite resin can also be used for other dental procedures, such as cosmetic bonding, making it a versatile and reliable material for various treatments.

Are there any disadvantages to using composite resin?
As with most dental treatments, there are often pros and cons for each to consider when thinking about the treatment of tooth decay. Composite resin does not last as long as other materials, so patients considering cosmetic treatments using this material need to keep in mind that the restoration will need to be replaced regularly. While this material is made to match the patient’s current smile, it can stain with time and require replacement to maintain integration into the natural tooth.
