What are dental implants?
Dental implants are used for tooth root replacement. The implant is a small titanium or zirconium post that Drs. Abhishek Apratim and Sam Gupta will place in the bone of the jaw. The implant placement works by stimulating the formation of bone around it in a process known as osseointegration. Osseointegration allows the implant to solidify into the jawbone for a stable foundation. Once this has occurred, the implant is safely in place and can be restored over the top using a restoration.
How are dental implants restored?
The restoration used over the abutment of the dental implant varies depending on the patient’s situation. A dental crown is made and placed over the implant to replace a single tooth. Dental implants may be used on one or both sides of a dental bridge to offer support. For patients considering full dentures to replace the entire arch of teeth, dental implants may be used along the dental arch to hold a full denture in place. This process is known as “implant-retained dentures” and is a popular choice for many patients facing complete tooth loss or extraction.

Is the placement of dental implants painful?
The procedure of placing dental implants can cause pain, which is why we use proper sedation for patients and pair it with local anesthetics to ensure comfort from start to finish. There may be some discomfort after the procedure as the area heals, but most patients are able to manage this using over-the-counter pain medications. As the area heals, our team is then able to see patients to talk to them about restoration options.
