When we see a patient with severe decay or tooth damage, one of the first questions is usually whether the tooth can be saved. Often the answer is yes, with root canal therapy at our Burlington dental office. If you cringe at those words, don’t worry. We offer a number of options to keep you
calm and comfortable throughout the process.
Do you need root canal therapy?
The only way to answer that question is an examination by a
dentist. If a cavity or fracture only affects hard outer layers of the tooth, it can be repaired. However, if the soft tissue (dental pulp) in the middle of the tooth is injured or infected, root canal therapy is needed.
The procedure involves opening the tooth and removing the damaged pulp. The canals are then sterilized, filled, and sealed to prevent reinfection. Finally, a custom made
crown is cemented over the tooth, protecting it from further damage. Since the nerve is removed,
the tooth can no longer ache.

It is always best to keep your teeth as long as possible and with a root canal, we are able to keep our teeth for a long time.
When is a root canal needed?
A root canal is needed when there is an infection on the tooth of some sort and at that time there is a choice to take out the tooth or to keep the tooth.
It is always a better option to keep the tooth as long as possible because taking out a tooth comes with its own challenges in the long run.
Is a root canal painful? Root canal seems scary to some people because of the notion of the pain associated with it. When we do the root canal procedure there is no pain at that time. You are just as comfortable as you were if you were getting a filling.
Sometimes the fears are there due to what you might have heard from other people and their experiences.
That doesn't have to be your experience as, at Dentistry at LaSalle, we do not proceed with any treatment if you are uncomfortable.
