Importance of Caring for Implants after Surgery
Dental implants are considered the best option for replacing missing teeth due to their strength, stability and longevity. At the same time, the implant process can be lengthy, taking six months or longer to complete. At Dentistry at LaSalle, Burlington, Ontario, you work with Dr. Abhishek Apratim and Dr. Sam Gupta for implant treatment. Knowing what to expect from this treatment and how to care for your implants after surgery can help you recover smoothly.

The Implant Process
Implants comprise a titanium post, an abutment and a restoration. The post is implanted into your jaw surgically, where it will fuse with your bone system, which can take three to six months to complete. Once this process is complete, an abutment is attached to hold your restoration, which can take one to two weeks to heal. Lastly, your restoration is attached, which requires no recovery time before use.
Care for Tooth Implants After Surgery
Implant care can be divided into two parts: Immediate Post-Op Care and Long-term Care.
Immediate Post-Op Care
Feeling mild pain, soreness, swelling, or minor bleeding is normal after implant surgery. These symptoms should subside in the days following your procedure.
To care for your implants:
- Wait 24 hours before brushing your teeth
- Rinse with warm salt water to reduce your risk of infection
- Use gauze to stave off bleeding, if necessary, and ice to minimize facial swelling
- Manage pain with OTC medications
- Avoid strenuous physical activities for three to four days after surgery
- Eat soft foods for the first week or until you feel comfortable chewing again. Don’t use a straw for smoothies or drinks
- Avoid alcohol and smoking for the first week after surgery

Long-term Maintenance and Care
Once the implants have fully healed, you can resume your oral care routine. Implants require the same care as your natural teeth, with brushing, flossing and routine dental cleaning. Your dentist will monitor the health of your implants to ensure no complications arise from the surgery.
